Julie Koch

fine jewelry and eggshell mixed media

At the heart of my work is a desire to tell stories through materials—stories of memory, resilience, and lived experience. What began as a focused practice in silver jewelry has evolved into a broader exploration of kintsugi-inspired jewelry and mixed-media framed works. Whether worn on the body or experienced as a symbolic composition, each piece is rooted in a deep connection to the human journey.

Much of my recent work centers on a body of jewelry incorporating gilded eggshells and hand-formed bronze components. Inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi, these pieces celebrate the beauty found in brokenness. I carefully paint and gild the eggshells, emphasizing their natural cracks with shimmering gold, then strengthen them with layers of resin before pairing them with sculpted bronze elements that echo organic, earth-inspired forms. Worn close to the body, these works become symbols of strength, vulnerability, and the quiet power of healing.

These same themes extend into a series of framed mixed-media works that also feature gilded eggshells. In these compositions, fragments are elevated into focal points—honoring fracture, repair, and the layered complexity of beauty found in imperfection.

Using recycled precious metals, I also create fine silver, sterling, copper, and bronze jewelry—rings, earrings, pendants, and bracelets—each handcrafted with a focus on organic design, balance, and emotional resonance. My intention is to offer wearable art that feels grounding, soulful, and timeless.

Through my work, I hope to honor the stories we carry, the wisdom of nature, the beauty of imperfection, and the enduring power of art made by hand and heart.
